During our many courses about the internet, one of the main questions we always get asked is, "How do I find information on the web, there is so much of it !"

Well, there is a great deal of information on the web and it is growing by the hour, a lot of it is very useful, however, there is a definite art in finding what you are looking for, and we hope the following information will help you get the facts that you are after.

There are numerous search engines, some are global and some are Country Specific.  Unless you are looking for something across the Atlantic, then we would suggest that you stick to the Country Specific search engines.

For example, instead of looking at www.google.com , try looking at www.google.co.uk They will all be using the same data for your search, however, because you are entering their site from the UK portal, then the Home Page is UK based not Stateside based, (as are their adverts!)

Talking of Home Pages vs. Search Engines, is there a difference between Home Pages and Search Engines, after all, you can search from most Home Pages can't you?

Actually, this is more difficult to answer than you think, however, we will put it as simply as possible.

A Home Page is exactly that, the page your browser starts up on when you open it up.  If you haven't altered it, then most browsers open up into their manufacturers Home Page.

For instance, if you are using Microsoft's Internet Explorer, then it would normally open up onto the first page of http://www.msn.co.uk/   Here you will find much more than a Search Engine.  You can create free email addresses, web pages, chat to other people on the internet, and a whole lot more (they are also referred to as "Portals"). And yes, you can search the internet too, the default option last time I looked was "Search the Web using MSN" however, I know that in the drop down menu there are at least two more options, "Search the Web using Excite" and "Search the Web using UKPlus".

So to sum up, Home Pages are a lot more than Search Engines, but you can still find just plain search engines that do virtually nothing else but search, a classic example of this is "Google" and you can find a link to both MSN and Google on the right hand side of this page. This is not to say that Google are just another search engine, they are not, far from it, they also offer free email and storage space, a great place to start if you need an email address quickly!

We have listed some of the more well known search engines for you to try, have a look on the left hand side of the page for them.
